Translations of the DES and A-DES are available through the Sidran Institute

The Sidran Institute is happy to be able to distribute the original English-language DES and A-DES and several translations. Sidran is in the process of compiling the translations and securing permission for distribution from the translators. As these translations become available, they will be added to the list on their website.

Additional existing translations that we are not aware of may be available that are not listed below.

The DES is available in these languages:

Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) by Eve Bernstein Carlson, Ph.D., and Frank W. Putnam, M.D. Original English version.

Brazilian Portugese
Translation by Adriana Fiszman. Includes a published paper describing the process of cross-cultural adaptation of the instrument to Portuguese.

Cambodian (Khmer)
Translation by Rhonda Rosser.

Chinese, Mandarin
Developed by Stephanie R. Olen-Kleindorfer, Doctoral Candidate in Clinical Psychology, Widener University, M.A. (anthropology), with the assistance of Professors Zhongheng Dai and Cun-Dao He of the Department of Psychology, East China Normal University, and Professor Jiecheng Zhao of the Shanghai Institute of Mental Health. Standard procedures for triple blind back-translation were followed, with the assistance of Kate Fang of the University of Pennsylvania. Initial results from several populations in China are available from Ms. Olen-Kleindorfer upon request.

You do not need special permission to use the DES in your research or clinical work. Because of the ever increasing costs of paper and postage, Sidran charges a small fee to underwrite the distribution of the DES and related materials. For a package containing one copy each of the DES (designate language, please), An Update on the Dissociative Experiences Scale (Dissociation 6 (1):16-27) which is the DES manual, and a list of references, the cost is $12. The A-DES packet contains five copies of the test (English only), and an article by the authors. The A-DES also costs $12.
